SNSA Crowns Henderson Cup 2014 Champions

A record field of 128 teams in 15 divisions vied for the right to be crowned champions at the Henderson Cup 2014 tournament, November 21-23 at Heritage Park in Henderson, Nevada. The tournament concluded with a Sunday full of exciting semifinal and championship game action.

The U7 boys division consisted of a record 14 teams vying for the Henderson Cup championship.  Arsenal dominated pool A, the Super Heroes edged out the Dragons to win pool B, Rebel Alliance posted 30 points to qualify from pool C, and the Strikers benefited from a draw between the Hornets and the Snakes to win pool D.  The semifinals featured a pair of tight games, with Arsenal defeating the Super Heroes 4-3, and the Strikes slipping by Rebel Alliance 5-4.  The final match was a back-and-forth affair, with Arsenal prevailing 5-3 to win their first Henderson Cup championship.

A 9-team group competed in a 3-pool round robin competition in the U7 girls division.  After losing to the Sidekicks, the Sirens squeaked by the Possums 8-7 to advance from pool A.  The Henderson Hot Shots beat the Shooting Stars 7-1 and edged the Fire 3-2 to win pool B.  The Sunflowers earned a pair of victories over the Strikers and the Rainbow Alicorns to take pool C.  In the finals pool, the Sirens and Hot Shots tied 2-2, with the Sirens winning the PK shootout to earn the bonus point.  In the second pool game, the Sunflowers defeated the Hot Shots 5-0 to eliminate the Hot Shots.  The Sunflowers then powered by the Sirens 8-4 in the final game to win their first Henderson Cup championship.

In the U8 boys divison, ten teams fought for the Henderson Cup championship medals.  The Rebels beat the Thunderbolts 4-2, and tied the Firebirds 3-3; they owned the tiebreaker over the Firebirds and advanced to the semifinals game.  In pool B, Arsenal defeated Lightning 5-2 and beat the Sharks 4-1 to claim the other semifinal spot.  The Kool Kidz beat Hotspur, Nemesis and Ninjas to win the 4-team pool C and earn a spot in the finals.  In the semifinal game, Arsenal slipped by the Rebels 2-1 to advance to the finals.  The Kool Kidz prevailed 5-2 in the finals to win their first Henderson Cup championship.

The U8 girls division consisted of 11 teams.  The Honeybees beat Ponytail Posse 6-2 and edged Roadrunners 4-3 to win pool A and and move to the semifinals.  The Super Girls and Superstars tied for the lead in pool B, with the Superstars holding the tiebreaker and earning a spot in the semifinals.  The Super Girls advanced to the quarterfinal game against the Flash, which upset the Pandas 5-1 to take 2nd place in pool C.  The Dragonflies won pool C to advance to the semifinals.  The Flash defeated the Super Girls 6-3 in the quarterfinals to earn the final spot in the semifinals.  In the semifinal, the Honeybees defeated the Flash 5-1, and the Superstars beat the Dragonflies 5-3.  The Superstars then wore down the Honeybees 4-0 in the final to win their second Henderson Cup championship.

Twelve teams competed in the Henderson Cup U9 boys division.  The Bulldogs beat the Dark Knights and edged the Rebels 7-6 to win pool A.  The Scorpions defeated Strike Force 4-0 and slipped by the Wildcats 4-3 to advance from pool B.  In pool C, Fury beat the Pterodactyls and tied the Steamers 7-7; the Fury advanced to the semifinals on a tiebreaker.  The Tigers defeated the Earthquakes 5-2 and squeaked by the Lightning Bolts 2-1 to win pool D.  In the semifinals, the Scorpions edged the Bulldogs 4-3, and the Tigers beat the Fury 6-2 to advance to the finals, in which the Scorpions prevailed 4-2 to win their first Henderson Cup championship.

The U9 girls division featured an 8-team field, with teams competing in two pools of four.  The Angels survived 3 tight games to win pool A, with victories over the Strikers (2-1), Heartbreakers (5-4), and Dragonflies (5-3).  Pool B also featured some exciting games, with the Elektras beating the Butterflies 5-4, Sounders 3-2 and Shortcakes 4-1 to win the pool.  The final was one of the most exciting games in the tournament.  Tied 3-3 after regulation, it took 10 penalty kicks to determine the winner, and the Angels emerged victorious with a 5-4 PK edge.  

In the U10 boys division, the Sharks won pool A by defeating the Lions 6-3 and the Tornadoes 5-2.  The Astro Blasters advanced to the semifinals from pool B with a victory over the Thunder and a tie with Albion; Albion took 2nd place to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.  In pool C, the Monsters defeated the Galaxy and Forza to win the pool.  In spite of losing to Forza in an exciting 7-6 pool game, the Sidekicks took 2nd place in the pool and advanced to the quarterfinals on points.  Albion edged Sidekicks 3-2 in an exciting quarterfinal game to earn the last spot in the semifinals.  The semifinals featured two tightly-contested games, with Albion beating the Sharks 4-2 in the first semifinal.  In the second semifinal, the Astro Blasters and Monsters tied 3-3 in regulation, with the Monsters prevailing 3-1 in the PK shootout to earn a spot in the finals.  Albion jumped out to a 4-0 first half lead in the final game, and never looked back, winning 6-3 to take the championship.

The U10 girls division consisted of a 9-team field.  Pink Ladies advanced on points in pool A with a 6-1victory over the Diamond Girls and a 4-4 tie against Intensity.  The Dazzling Daisies won pool B with a pair of shutouts over Cosmos (5-0) and Hot Shots (6-0).  In pool C, the Rainbow Rockerz advanced on points with a 3-1 win over the Rockets and a 4-4 tie of the Lightning Bugs.  In the finals pool, Pink Ladies edged Dazzling Daisies 3-2 in game 1.  The Daisies beat Rainbow Rockerz 6-1 in game 2 to secure 2nd place.  The Pink Ladies defeated Rainbow Rockerz 4-1 in the final to win the championship.

In the U11 boys division, Barca-8 beat the Spurs 4-1 and edged Real Las Vegas 3-2 to win pool A; Real Las Vegas beat the Spurs 5-2 for second place and earned a berth in the semifinals.  The Jedis won all three of their games to win pool B; Galaxy finished 2nd in the pool to advance to the semifinals.  The semifinal featured a pair of exciting games, with Barca-8 slipping by Galaxy 1-0, and the Jedis edging Real Las Vegas 2-1.  In the final game, Barca-8 and the Jedis were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.  In an exciting PK shootout that featured outstanding goalkeeper play, Barca-8 prevailed 1-0 to win their first Henderson Cup championship.

Seven teams vied for the title in the U11 girls division.  With a 7-1 victory over the Fireflies and a 2-2 tie against Relentless United, the Wildcats won group A on point; Relentless United finished 2nd to also earn a spot in the semifinals.  In pool B, the Shadows posted victories over the Firecrackers (5-0), Shooting Stars (5-1) and Dirt Devils (2-0) to win the pool.  The Dirt Devils finished 2nd to advance to the semifinals.  In the semifinals the Dirt Devils defeated the Wildcats 4-0, and the Shadows beat Relentless United 3-0, to set up a rematch for the final game.  This time the Dirt Devils had the last laugh, shutting out the Shadows 3-0 to win their first Henderson Cup championship.

The U12 boys division consisted of eight teams in two pools of four.  Blue Man Group defeated the Titans (4-0) and the Huskers (1-0), and tied the Cosmos (2-2) to earn enough points to win pool A.  In pool B the Gladiators posted wins over the Highlanders (5-2), the Strikers (4-1) and the Rockstars (2-1) to advance to the finals.  In the final match, the Gladiators shut out Blue Man Group 5-0 to win their second Henderson Cup championship.

The U12 girls division featured a four-team round-robin competition.  The Webshooters finished first in the pool with victories over Hot Shots (3-0) and Flaming Stars, and a tie with Pitch Perfect (3-3) to advance on points.  Pitch Perfect finished 2nd to earn a rematch with the Webshooters in the finals.  The Webshooters prevailed 2-0 in the finals to win their second Henderson Cup championship.

A four-team round-robin pool was also employed in the U13 girls division.  The Mighty Mustangs finished 1st in the pool with victories over the Galaxy (1-0), Blitz (1-0) and Vegas Angels (10-0).  The Blitz finished second in the pool to set up a rematch and earn a chance for redemption, but the Mighty Mustangs again edged the Blitz 1-0 in the finals to earn their second Henderson Cup championship.

The U14 boys division consisted of a five-team round-robin competition, in which the team establishing the highest points total wins the championship.  The Rebels and Fire Dogs both posted wins over Henderson International, Chelsea and the Henderson Red Bulls to set up a climactic final pool game for the championship.  The Rebels prevailed 1-0 in an exciting defensive battle to win their first Henderson Cup championship.

The U14 girls featured another 9-team field with a 3-team finals pool used to determine the winner.  The Rebels defeated the Rebel Chicks 6-0 and tied the defending champion Quails 2-2 to advance from pool A on a points tiebreaker.   In pool B, the Strikers beat the Galaxy Girls 3-0 and edged the USA Wildcats 3-2 to earn a spot in the finals pool.  The Mighty Mustangs beat the Headhunters 4-2 and the Firecrackers 4-0 to win pool C.  In the first game of the finals pool, the Strikers beat the Rebels 3-0, but the Strikers fell to the Mighty Mustangs 2-1 in the second pool game.  In third finals pool game, the Rebels erased a 2-goal deficit late in the game to earn a 2-2 tie with the Mighty Mustangs.  The tie was enough to give the Mighty Mustangs enough points to win the championship, with the Strikers finishing second.

Congratulations to all of our HUYS and SHU teams that participated in the Henderson Cup 2014 tournament.  While only a 30 teams went home with medals, all of our players are champions for the determination and sportsmanship they showed throughout the weekend.  We would also like to thank our SNSA field operations staff, who worked tirelessly to put on a first-class event at an affordable price for our HUYS and SHU teams.
