Southern Nevada Soccer Association's Henderson Cup 2012 concluded with a Sunday full of exciting semifinal and final game action, as well as deciding games in round-robin pool play, resulting in the crowning of 13 Henderson Cup champions.
In the U8 boys divison, the Dust Devils defeated the Galaxy 6-2 in the semifinal game for the right to meet Group C winner Sidekicks in the championship game. The Dust Devils dominated in the final game, defeating the Sidekicks 5-0 to take the championship.
The U8 girls division featured four 3-team pools, from which the Unicorns, Shooting Stars, Knockouts and Soccer Sisters emerged to advance to the semifinals. The Shooting Stars defeated the Unicorns 5-2 in the first semifinal, while the Knockouts beat the Soccer sisters by the identical score in the second semifinal. The Shooting Stars and Knockouts played an exciting final match and ended up tied 3-3 at the end of regulation play. The Shooting Stars managed to win the resulting PK shootout 2-1 to claim the gold medals.
Pool play excitement highlighted the U9 boys division, with a number of close games played to determine the two teams to advance to the final game. The Jaguars outlasted the Wizards and Jedis to win pool A, while the Vegas Knights edged the Falcons to win pool B. In the final game the Jaguars broke a 1-1 halftime tie to defeat the Vegas Knights for the championship.
The U9 girls division featured a quarterfinal game matching the 2nd place pool B team, the Dirt Devils, against the 2nd place pool C team, the Pumas. The Pumas prevailed 5-2 to advance to the semifinals, where they took on the Pool A winners, the Shadows. The Pumas edged the Shadows 2-1 to advance to the final game. The other semifinal featured a rematch of the Spring Classic final game, with pool B winner Webshooters facing pool C winner Cheetahs. The Cheetahs avenged their Spring Classic loss, winning the semifinal 4-1, and advancing to the final against the Pumas, who they defeated 9-0 in pool play. The Pumas were a different team in the final, matching the Cheetahs 1-1 in regulation and sending the game to a PK shootout. The Cheetahs ultimately prevailed 4-1 in the shootout to win the championship.
In the U10 boys division, Shark Frenzy and Henderson International advanced to the semifinals from pool A. The Gladiators won pool B, and Italia edged the Wolves 3-2 in the final pool game to finish 2nd in pool B and advance to the semifinals. In the first semifinal Shark Frenzy defeated Italia 5-2, while the Gladiators beat Henderson International 6-3 in the second semifinal. The championship match was a defensive battle, with the Gladiators managing to score one goal for a 1-0 victory over Shark Frenzy to take the title.
The U10 girls division consisted of a 5-team round-robin format to determine the champion. The Liberty Belles won three games and tied one to amass 34 points and win the championsip. The Soccer Stars and Little Cosmos entered the final pool game with 2nd place on the line. The Soccer Stars defeated the Little Cosmos 3-1 to take the silver medals.
The U11 boys division also featured a 5-team round-robin format. The first game of pool play between the Cobras and Storm turned out to be the determining game. The Cobra's 4-3 comeback victory over the Storm vaulted them to a three win, one tie record and a total tally of 33 points, just enough to win the championship. The Storm ended up with a three win, one loss record and a total of 32 points to win the silver medals.
In the U11G division, the Lucky Charms and Lightning emerged from pool A, and the Strikers and Peace Divas topped pool B to advance to semifinal play. The Lucky Charms edged the Peace Divas 2-1 in the first semifinal, and the Strikers defeated the defending champion Lightning 3-0 in the second semifinal. The Strikers brought a full assault in the championship game, dispatcing the Lucky Charms 6-0 to win the championship.
The U12 boys division employed the 5-team round-robin format to determine the champion. The defending champion Fire were upset 1-0 by Xtreme in their 3rd pool game, leaving the Fire trailing the Rebels 20-23 in accumulated match points heading in to a final pool-game showdown against the Rebels for the championship. The Fire came back to edge the Rebels 3-2 to win the gold medals, with the Rebels taking the silver.
In the U12 girls division the Soccer Divas prevailed in pool A, and the Ruff Ryders won pool B to advance to the championship game. The defending champion Ruff Ryders were too much for the Soccer Divas in the final game, winning 3-0 to claim the championship.
The U13 girls division featured a number of close games in pool play, with 8 of the 12 games decided by 2 goals or less. In the final preliminary game in pool A the Storm defeated the Shooting Stars to advance to the final game. The All Starz managed to out-point the Strikers 22-18 to win pool B. The final game was a defensive battle, with the All Starz edging the Storm 1-0 to win the championship.
The U14 boys division featured a three-team round-robin format. In the first game Henderson Real defeated Rebels LV 1-0. In the second game, the Phantoms also edged Rebels LV 1-0, setting up a final game between Henderson Real and Phantoms for the championship. In the final, the teams played to an exciting 2-2 tie at the end of regulation. Henderson Real prevailed 3-2 in the resulting PK shootout to win the championship.
A five-team round-robin format was used to determine the U14G champion, in which 9 of the 10 pool games were decided by 1 goal or less (3 tie games). The defending champion Xpress accumulated 28 match points to win the championship. The Cheetahs finished 2nd with 20 points to win the silver medals.
Congratulations to all of our HUYS and SHU teams that participated in the Henderson Cup 2012 tournament. While only a 26 teams went home with medals, all of our players are champions for the determination and sportsmanship they showed throughout the weekend. We would also like to thank our SNSA field operations staff, who worked tirelessly to put on a first-class event at an affordable price for our HUYS and SHU teams.
