Spring Classic 2017 Tournament Champions Crowned

Southern Nevada Soccer Association 's Spring Classic 2017 Tournament concluded on Sunday, May 21 at Heritage Park.  The tournament, in its 13th year, hot weather and even hotter competition as teams battled for the title of Spring Classic champions.

Thirteen teams competed for the U7 boys division title. The Panthers, Torpedoes, Troopers and Sharks won their pools to advance to the semifinals.  After playing to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation in the first semifinal game, the Panthers defeated the Torpedoes 2-1 in a PK shootout to earn a spot in the final game.  In the second semifinal, the Troopers edged the Sharks 3-2.   The Panthers and Troopers engaged in a defensive battle in the final game, with the Panthers prevailing 2-0 to win the gold medals.

In the U7 girls division seven teams vied for the championship.  The Unicorns and Ponytail Posse finished first and second in Pool A to earn spots in the semifinals, while Pink Wallabies and Feisty Firecrackers (by virtue of goal differential over Rockstars) advanced from Pool B.  In the first semifinal the Feisty Firecrackers edged the Unicorns 1-0, and in the second semifinal the Pink Wallabies blanked Ponytail Posse 3-0.  The exciting championship game ended tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play; the Feisty Firecrackers won the ensuing PK shootout 1-0 to claim the title of Spring Classic U7G champions.

Ten teams competed for the U8 boys division title.  SH Wolverines won Pool A, while the Spartans won two tightly contested games to take Pool B and advance to the semifinal game.  SH Wolverines defeated the Spartans 4-1 in the semifinal to advance to the championship game.  In Pool C, after a series of competitive games, SH Ramblers accumulated 24 match points to win the group and earn a spot in the final.  The final game was tied 1-1 at the half, but SH Ramblers scored three second-half goals for a 4-1 victory to win the champions medals.

The U8 girls division featured eight teams vying for the title. The SH Sidekicks (28 match points) and Pink Ladies (17 match points) qualified for the semifinals from Pool A, while Juventus (29 match points) and Pixies (19 match points) qualified from Pool B.  In the semifinals, SH Sidekicks shut out the Pixies 6-0, and Juventus blanked Pink Ladies 5-0 to advance to the finals.  In the championship game Juventus was dominant, posting a 6-0 win to earn the gold medals.

Five U9 boys teams competed in a round-robin format for the gold medals.  After three pool games the Avengers amassed 27 match points, while the Timbers accumulated 24 match points in their first three pool games, setting up a deciding game for the championship.  The Timbers  blanked the Avengers 4-0 to win the title of Spring Classic 2017 champions.

Six teams vied for the U9 girls Spring Classic title.  SH Bandits (19 match points) won Pool A, with the Sunflowers (13 match points) finishing second; Rainbow Alicorns (14 match points) won Pool B, with the Ponies (13 match points) finishing second to set up the semifinal matchups.  In the first semifinal, the Ponies edged SH Bandits 2-1, while Rainbow Alicorns nipped the Sunflowers 2-1 to advance to the finals.  After tying in pool play, Rainbow Alicorns and Ponies rematch resulted in another tie in regulation play (2-2).  Rainbow Alicorns prevailed 2-0 in the ensuing PK shootout to win the champions medals.

The U10 boys division featured a nine team group in which each team played two pool games.  The Thunderbolts (19 points), Strikers (17 points), and BC Alliance (14 points) advanced directly to the semifinals after pool play, while the Lightning (12 points) and Rebels (11 points) qualified for the quarterfinals.  In the quarterfinal game, Lightning and Rebels tied 2-2 in regulation time; Lightning edged Rebels 5-4 in the PK shootout to claim the 4th semifinal spot.  In the first semifinal Lightning, who had lost to the Thunderbolts 6-5 in pool play, exacted revenge with a 4-2 victory to earn a spot in the final game.  In the second semifinal Strikers and BC Alliance played to a 0-0 defensive stalemate in regulation; Strikers prevailed 5-3 in the PK shootout to advance.  The championship game between the Strikers and Lightning featured another 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, and again the Strikers showed their PK shooting prowess, edging Lightning 5-4 to take the title.

The U10G division featured eight teams in two pools of four.  Shooting Stars (28 match points) won Pool A; Ginga Girls and Knights (15 points) tied for second, but Ginga Girls advanced with a better goal differential.  Dragonflies (28 match points) won Pool B; Wildcats and Pixies (13 points) tied for second, with Wildcats advancing based on goal differential.  In semifinals, the Shooting Stars defeated the Wildcats 3-1 and the Dragonflies beat the Pixies 3-1 to advance to the final game.  In the tightly-contested final game, Dragonflies scored the only goal to edge the Shooting Stars 1-0 for the championship title.

Four teams vied for the U11 boys Spring Classic 2017 title.  In group play Slap Shots (24 points) and Wildcats (19 points) finished first and second, respectively, to earn spots in the championship game.  In an exciting final game Slap Shots edged the Wildcats 2-1 to win the gold medals.

Five U11 girls teams competed in a round-robin format for the gold medals.  After three pool games the Lightning amassed 28 match points, while SH Tigers accumulated 24 match points in their first three pool games, setting up a deciding final game.  SH Tigers blanked the Lightning 4-0 victory to win the Spring Classic 2017 championship,

The U12 boys division also featured a five team round-robin format.  Henderson Fire completed their four pool games on Saturday night, posting a formidable total of 29 match points.  The Fireballs entered Sunday play with 17 match points and two games to play; they posted two victories to finish with 36 match points and earn the titel of Spring Classic 2017 champions, with Henderson Fire earning the silver medals.

The U12 girls division consisted of eight teams divided into two 4-team pools.  Angels with Attitude (22 match points) won Pool A, and Lightning (12 match points) edged BC Alliance 1-0 to finish second in Pool A and advance to the semifinals.  Force (29 match points) won Pool B, and Kickin' Gators (14 match points) defeated Rockerz 5-2 to finish second in Pool B.  In the semifinals Angels with Attitude blanked Kickin' Gators 5-0, and Force shut out Lightning 6-0 to advance to the finals.  In a defensive classic, Force edged Angels with Attitude 1-0 to win the gold medals.

Four teams vied for the U13 boys Spring Classic 2017 title.  In group play Galaxy (24 points) and Transformers (23 points) finished first and second, respectively, to earn spots in the championship game.  After tying 3-3 in pool play, Galaxy got the better of Transformers 5-2 in the final game to win the Spring Classic 2017 championship.

The U13 girls and U14 girls divisions were combined for the tournament, and five teams competed in a round-robin format for the gold medals.  After three pool games Force amassed 30 match points, while the Mustang Stars accumulated 26 match points in their first three pool games to set up a match to determine the champion.  In a hard-fought thriller Force and Mustang Stars tied 1-1 in the final game, which maintained Force's 4 match point lead over Mustang Stars and earned Force the gold medals.

Five U14 boys teams vied in a round-robin format for the Spring Classic 2017 championship.  After four pool games Phoenix United accumulated 30 match points to lead the group.  The Titans entered their final game with 22 match points, needing a victory over LV United to win the championship.  In an exciting game the Titans edged LV United 3-2 to push their total to 31 match points and to win the championship medals by one point over Phoenix United, who took the silver.

The high school boys Dust Devils and Vegas Aces played a winner-take-all game to determine the Spring Classic 2017 champion.  The teams played to an exciting 1-1 tie in regulation play.  The Dust Devils prevailed 4-2 in the ensuing PK shootout to win the gold medals, with the Vegas Aces taking the silver.

The high school girls division also played a winner-take-all game for the Spring Classic 2017 championship, featuring Rebels and Devastation.  This game also ended in a tie in regulation play (2-2), necessitating a PK shootout to determine the champion.  Devastation edged Rebels 5-4 in the PK shootout to earn the gold medals, with Rebels winning the silver.
