Southern Nevada Soccer Association 's Spring Classic 2014 Tournament concluded on Sunday, June 1 at Heritage Park. The tournament, in its 11th year, featured hot weather and even hotter competition as teams battled for the right to be called Spring Classic champions.
The U7 boys division featured a unique 3-pool format, in which the winners of the three pools advanced to finals pool matches. Arsenal survived a tough challenge from the Ninjas to win Pool A; the Rebels edged the Rattlers 3-2 to win Pool B, and Inter-Barça held on to defeat the Cobras 5-4 to win Pool C. In the Finals Pool, Inter-Barça defeated Arsenal 5-0 and slipped by the Rebels 2-1 to post 18 match points and wih the championship. Arsenal edged the Rebels 1-0 to win the silver medals.
In the U7G division the Mighty Mustangs, Superstars and Red Devils won their respective pools to advance to the semifinals. The Pandas and Ponytail Posse played a quarterfinal game to determine the 4th semifinalist. The Pandas prevailed 3-2 in an exciting match to earn a spot in the semifinals against the Mighty Mustangs. The Mighty Mustangs were mighty indeed, dispatching the Pandas 7-1. In the other semifinal, the Superstars and Red Devils played to a 4-4 draw tha required a PK shootout to decide. The Superstars won 4-3 in PKs, earning a spot in the finals. In the championship game, the Mighty Mustangs exerted their power, defeating the Superstars 3-0 to win the title.
The Tigers, Phoenix, Pterodactyls and Strike Force emerged from pool play in the U8 boys division to advance to the semifinals. In the first semifinal, the Tigers and Strike Force played to a 1-1 tie in regulation. The Strike Force prevailed 4-2 in the subsequent PK shootout to earn a spot in the final game. In the second semifinal, the Pterodactyls held off a second-half rally by the Phoenix to win 4-3. The Pterodactyls went on to defeat the Strike Force 3-0 in the final game to win the U8 champions medals.
In the U8 girls division, the Butterflies and Heartbreakers advanced from Pool A to the semifinals, while the Strikers and Shortcakes advanced from Pool B. The Butterflies and Shortcakes played to a 3-3 tie in regulation; the Shortcakes edged the Butterflies 4-3 in the ensuing PK shootout. The Strikers edged the Heartbreakers 2-1 in the other semifinal to advance to the finals. In the final game, the Shortcakes avenged the earlier 1-0 loss to the Strikers in pool play with a key second half goal to post a 3-2 win and secure the champions title.
The U9 boys division featured 13 teams vying for the title of Spring Classic champions. Astroblasters, Sharks, Liverpool and Albion won their respective pools to advance to the semifinals. In the first semifinal, the Sharks rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit with three second-half goals to win 4-3 and advance to the finals. In the second semifinal, Liverpool scored three second-half goals to defeat Albion 5-2. Liverpool then proceeded to dominate the championship game with a 7-1 victory over the Sharks to win the gold medals.
In the U9 girls division the Pink Ladies and Dazzling Daisies advanced to the semifinals from Pool A, and Hello Kitties and Rainbow Rockers advanced to the semifinals from Pool B. In the first semifinal, the Pink Ladies dominated the Rainbow Rockerz 6-1. The second semifinal between Hello Kitties and the Dazzling Daisies ended in a 1-1 tie when time expired; the Dazzling Daisies prevailed 3-2 in the PK shootout to earn a spot in the final game. The Pink Ladies continued their dominance with a 4-0 victory over the Dazzling Daisies to win the U9 girls Spring Classic championship.
The U10 boys division competition featured a 4-team round-robin to determine the two teams advancing to the championship game. The Galaxy posted 23 match points to finish first in the pool, and Real Las Vegas accumulated 15 points for second place. In the championship match, the Galaxy edged Real Las Vegas 4-3 to win the gold medals.
In the U10G division the Wildcats, Strikers and Fire Girls won their respective pools to advance to the semifinals. The Shooting Stars and Angels played a quarterfinal game to determine the 4th semifinalist. The Shooting Stars defeated the Angels 3-2 in an exciting match to earn a spot in the semifinals against the Wildcats, which the Wildcats won 4-1. In the other semifinal, the Strikers edged the Fire Girls 2-1 to earn a spot in the finals. In the championship game, the Strikers rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to tie the game 3-3 at the end of regulation, but the Wildcats prevailed 3-0 in the ensuing PK shootout to win the championship.
The Gladiators and Highlanders emerged from Pool A of the U11 boys division to advance to the semifinals, while Henderson International and the Earthquakes advanced from Pool B. In the first semifinal, the Earthquakes defeated the Gladiators 4-1, while Henderson International dominated the Cosmos 6-1 in the second semifinal. In the final game the Earthquakes were unable to avenge their earlier 2-1 loss in pool play, with Henderson International posting a 3-1 victory to win the championship.
The U11 girls division featured exciting pool play, with 4 tie games making for tight competition. The Soccer Stars and Liberty Belles advanced to the semifinals from Pool A, and the Evil Sparkles and Webshooters advanced from Pool B. The Webshooters avenged a loss in last season's championship game, defeating the Soccer Stars 2-0 in the first semifinal. The Evil Sparkles defeated a depleted Liberty Belles team 4-1 to win the second semifinal, setting up a rematch with the Webshooters, who they tied 1-1 in pool play. The Evil Sparkles left no doubt in the final, taking a 1-0 lead at the half and scoring two more late goals to win 3-0 and earn the championship title.
The top 3 teams in the U12 boys division played a round-robin to determine the Spring Classic 2014 champion. Revolution and Celtic eliminated the Cobras in pool play to advance to the championship game. In the final, Revolution and Celtic were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play. Revolution won 3-1 in the ensuing PK shootout to win the gold medals.
The U12 girls division featured a 5-team round-robin format, with the team accumulating the most match points declared champion. Entering Sunday play, the Vegas Angels had 22 match points, Peace Divas had 21 match points, and Mighty Mustangs had 19 match points. The Peace Divas defeated the Warriors 4-2 to earn 9 match points and post a final score of 30. The Mighty Mustangs managed to upset the Vegas Angels 1-0 to post a score of 27 points, earning the silver medals. The Peace Divas score of 30 points were enough to win the U12 girls divison championship.
The U13 boys divison also used a 5-team round-robin format, with the champion determined by the team accumulating the highest point total in pool play. Entering Sunday play the Dust Devils were in first place with 27 points (3 matches played), followed by Storm with 20 points (3 matches), Rebels with 9 points (2 matches), and Fire Dogs with 8 points (2 matches). The Dust Devils tied their final game against the Rebels 1-1 to post a score of 31 total points, which were enough to win the championship. The Fire Dogs won both of their games on Sunday to earn a second place finish with 28 points.
In the U13 girls division the Lucky Charms and Firecrackers advanced to the semifinals from Pool A, and the Mighty Mustangs and Rebels advanced from Pool B. In the first semifinal, the Lucky Charms scored a second-half goal to defeat the Rebels 1-0, while the Mighty Mustangs beat the Firecrackers 3-0 in the second semifinal. The Mighty Mustangs scored two first-half goals in the championship game, and held off a rally by the Lucky Charms to post a 2-1 win and earn the gold medals.
The Quails won Pool A in the U14 girls division and advanced to the semifinals with the second-place USA Wildcats. In Pool B, the Storm and the Shooting Stars both posted 24 match points to earn spots in the semifinals. The first semifinal featured a defensive battle, with the Shooting Stars prevailing to edge the Quails 1-0. In the second semifinal the Storm pounded the USA Wildcats 5-1. The Storm then defeated the Shooting Stars 3-1 in the final game to win the championship title.
The High School boys division featured a 4-team round-robin to determine the two teams advancing to the championship game. The Pahrump Trojans posted 26 match points to finish first in the pool, and Sporting Henderson accumulated 13 points to edge out Sporting BC for second place. In the championship match, the Pahrump Trojans defeated Sporting Henderson 5-2 to win the gold medals.
In the High School girls division the Pahrump Trojans and Xtreme won pools A and B, respectively, and Cheetahs and USA Eagles finished second to advance to the semifinal round. The Pahrump Trojans posted a 5-0 victory over the USA Eagles in the first semifinal, and Xtreme defeated the Cheetahs 2-0 in the second semifinal. In the championship game the Pahrump Trojans scored two second-half goals to beat Xtreme and win the High School girls Spring Classic 2014 title.
