Spring Classic 2023 Tourney Recap

Southern Nevada Soccer Association's Spring Classic 2023 Tournament concluded on Sunday, May 21 at Heritage Park.  The tournament, in its 19th year, featured lightning storms, hot weather and even hotter competition to determine our Spring Classic tournament champions and finalists.

The U7 Boys division featured ten teams divided into one bracket of four teams and two brackets of three teams. Bracket A pool games were tightly contested, with no games exceeding a 3 goal differential. The Golden Knights and Raiders each won two games and tied each other, but the Golden Knights posted 22 total match points compared with the Raiders 21 to earn a spot in the championship game.  The Ghostbusters won Bracket B with 19 match points, and the Rockets posted 18 match points to win Bracket C. The Ghostbusters and Rockets played an exciting semifinal game in which the Ghostbusters prevailed 5-3 to advance to the final game.  The championship game was a thriller, with the Ghostbusters and Golden Knights tied 3-3 at the end of regulation play. The Golden Knights won the ensuing PK shootout 2-1 to win the U7 championship.

The U7 Girls division also comprised ten teams and used a 4-3-3 bracket format. In bracket A, in spite of losing a pool match to the Mighty Mustangs (2-1), the Rebels accumulated 18 match points to win the bracket ahead of the Mustangs (16 match points) to earn a spot in the finals.  The Dolphins won Bracket B with 19 match points, and the Cardinals posted 19 match points to win Bracket C. In the semifinals the Cardinals blanked the Dolphins 2-0 to advance to the final game. The Cardinals kept rolling in the championship game, posting a 5-1 victory over the Rebels to earn the gold medals.

An eight team field vied for medals in the U8 boys division.  In Bracket A Manchester United's 2-1 win over Tazmanian Devils was the pivotal game, enabling them to total 25 match points compared to the Devils 19 to win the bracket. Storm Troopers finished 3rd in the bracket with 11 total match points.  Bracket B featured very tight pool matches among the Ninjas, Wolverines and Foot Ninjas, with Foot Ninjas posting 23 match points to win the group over Ninjas (22 points) and Wolverines (15 points). The U8 final was an exciting, fast-paced game, with Manchester United edging the Foot Ninjas 2-1 to earn title of Spring Classic champions.

The U8 girls division featured a tightly contested five team round-robin format.  Tiger Lilies posted a 3-1 record and 28 match points to win the gold medals. Barbies went 3-1, earning 25 match points, and Pixie Kicks went 2-1-1 and also posted 25 match points to tie for 2nd place; Barbies were awarded the silver medals by virtue of their 2-1 victory over Pixie Kicks.  Cheetahs finished 4th with 18 match points. 

A five team round-robin format was also used in the U9 boys division. After the first three pool matches the Desert Bullets led with 29 match points followed by LV Lights with 27 match points. The Desert Bullets and LV Lights faced each other in the final U9 round-robin match. The LV Lights edged the Desert Bullets 2-1 to earn the goad medals, with the Desert Bullets taking the silver.  The Silver Nuggets finished 3rd (15 match points) and the Rumble Bees finished 4th (14 match points).

Five teams vied for the U9 girls division title, playing each other in a round-robin format. The Mighty Mustangs finished with three wins and a draw in pool play, posting 34 points to win the gold medals. The Shooting stars won two games and tied two games to earn 27 match points and the silver medals.  Hot Mess Express went 2-1-1 in pool play to finish third with 23 match points.

The U10 Boys division consisted of ten teams using 4-3-3 brackets. Bracket A  featured several close games, with the Raptors (23 match points) overcoming the Trash Pandas (15 points) and Ohana FC (14 points) to advance to the finals.  The Stars won Bracket B with 18 match points, and the Cheetahs (15 points) finished ahead of the Yellowjackets (12 points) to win Bracket C. In the semifinal game the Cheetahs defeated the Stars 7-2 to advance to the final game.  The championship game was memorable, with the Raptors and Cheetahs tied 3-3 at the end of regulation play. The Cheetahs won the ensuing PK shootout 4-3 to earn the title of Spring Classic champions.

The U10 girls division featured another 5-team round-robin format. Ajax posted four wins and 37 match points to secure the gold medals. Stingrays and Tigers played for the silver medals in their final pool match, with Stingrays winning 4-2 to post 29 match points and earn the silver medals. Tigers finished third with 18 match points, and the USA Falcons finished 4th with 17 match points.

The U11 Boys division had six teams divided into two brackets and used a traditional format for pool play.  In bracket B the Dragons defeated Gryffindor and edged Goal Hunters 2-1 to win the group; Goal Hunters beat Gryffindor to finish 2nd in group and secure semifinal positions.  In the semifinals Goal Hunters outlasted Southern Highlands Storm 3-2, and Dragons beat Raiders 6-2 to set up a rematch in the finals.  The Goal Hunters exacted revenge for their pool match loss, edging the Dragons 1-0 in the championship game to win the gold medals.

The U11 Girls division consisted of six teams divided into two brackets and used a crossover format for pool play.  In bracket A both Sparkle Dragons and Warriors posted 22 match points to advance to the semifinals. The Golden Flamingos finished atop bracket B, and the Royals finished 2nd to earn semifinal births. Both exciting semifinals concluded with penalty kick shootouts. In the first semifinal the match was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, and Warriors edged Sparkle Dragons 2-1 in the PK shootout to advance to the finals. The second semifinal was tied 1-1 as time expired; the Royals prevailed in the ensuing PK shootout to earn the other finals berth.  The championship match was another nail-biter, with the Royals surviving to defeat the Warriors 3-2 and earn the Spring Classic championship.

Five teams competed in a round-robin format in the U12 boys division; the competition featured several close games and each team earned at least 10 match points.   Knights FC posted two wins and two draws to earn 26 match points and secure the gold medals.  Tigers and Vipers each went 2-1-1 and tied for 2nd place with 22 match points. Warriors posted 14 match points and Arsenal finished with 11 match points.

The U12 girls division featured seven teams divided into brackets of four and three. In bracket A Silver Storm won all three pool matches to earn 28 match points and a spot in the semifinals. The Falcons won two matches and posted 19 match point to secure the 2nd semifinal berth. In bracket B  Rowdies (17 match points) and Mighty Rebels (9 match points) advanced to the semifinals.  The Mighty Rebels upset the Silver Storm 2-0 in the first semifinal, and the Rowdies blanked the Falcons 3-0 in the second semifinal. The championship match was a nail-biter, with Rowdies edging Mighty Rebels 1-0 to win the gold medals.

Three teams competed in U13/14 boys division in a round-robin finals pool format. The Vikings beat Arsenal 6-1 in the first pool match, and the Mambas defeated Arsenal 3-0 in the second pool match. The final pool match was tightly contested, with Vikings edging Mambas 3-2 to earn the championship title.

Four teams vied in a round-robin format in the U13/U14 girls bracket.  The Lightning won all three of their pool matches to post 28 points and win the gold medals. Lady Monarchs finished 2-1 to earn 16 points and secured the silver medals. LV Strikers finished 3rd with 8 match points.
